Behind the scenes - and 360 - at Google's Dalles data center

29 Mar 2016

Google has opened the – virtual - doors to its data center in the Dalles, Oregon, with a YouTube 360 video taking viewers inside the facility for a sneak peek.

The behind the scenes tour, lead by Google Cloud Platform developer advocate Sandeep, gives viewers access to a highly secure area most Google employees aren’t even able to access, and provides ‘a deeper look at the data center infrastructure itself.

The facility’s security includes a biometric iris scan and circle lock to restrict visitors.

While the video is – naturally – highly curated, it nonetheless provides an interesting insight into Google’s vast data center, which can hold more than 750,00 machines and what’s behind running it all – from the sizeable hard drive shredder to very colourful water pipes – in Google colours of course.

A single building can support more than one petabit per second of bandwidth.

Google recently announced it is building another 12 data centers by the end of 2017,

The video can be viewed using Google Chrome, the YouTube app on mobile devices, or Google Cardboard for a more immersive experience.
