Data center heat goes 3D and realtime

07 Apr 16

British data center thermal risk specialists EkkoSense have harnessed the power of gaming technology to provide a web-based 3D software and sensor offering providing a real time view of data center heat.

EkkoSoft Critical helps organisations identify and eradicate thermal risk in their data center and drive ‘significant’ additional energy savings, EkkoSense says.

Stu Redshaw, EkkoSense CTO, says research shows a third of data center outages are still the result of thermal issues.

He says EkkoSoft Critical addresses that issue directly, providing data center operators and owners with an intuitive and easy to use solution that allows them to visualise their own data center hot and cold spots in true web-based 3D.

“We’re building on our years’ of experience win critical infrastructure and thermal expertise and the result is a solution that clearly shows where organisations are either under-cooling or over-cooling - resulting in wasted energy or unacceptable thermal risks,” Redshaw says.

The solution consists of the web-based 3D application creating realtime 3D views of a data centers physical and thermal dynamics, and ‘Critical Things’, a range of secure wireless temperature, humidity and air flow sensors, including wireless cooling duty meter that quantifies exactly how much cooling a site is using.

Redshaw says the model has been deployed in consultancy engagements and has lead to one European data center achieving a 32% reduction in cooling energy.

He says the offering helps not just with thermal and cooling monitoring, but can also provide help for ongoing physical planning.
