Digital Realty achieves 'five nines' of uptime for 11th consecutive year

Digital Realty a global provider of data centre, colocation, and interconnection solutions announced today it has achieved "five nines" of uptime for the 11th consecutive year, exceeding 99.999% availability throughout 2017.

Digital Realty CEO William Stein says, “Delivering 'five nines' of uptime for the 11th straight year demonstrates our commitment to resiliency and to serving as a true business partner to all our customers, from enterprises to telecommunications customers and leading cloud service providers.

“We are especially proud of this milestone given our rapid growth and we remain focused on ensuring that all of our facilities around the world meet the same stringent standards for design, construction and operations."

Digital Realty recently surpassed 1.7 billion operating minutes across its 205 data centres, encompassing approximately 27 million square feet across 33 metropolitan areas globally. 

Over the past 11 years, the number of data centre suites operated by Digital Realty has grown from 74 suites at the start of 2007 to more than 750 by the end of 2017.

Digital Realty's ability to maintain consistent uptime over the past 11 years is due to its selection of strategic locations, robust data centre designs and outstanding staff, in addition to the company's rigorous operational processes and procedures. 

Digital Realty data centres have maintained consistent uptime even when major storms such as Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Sandy have left large swaths of the surrounding regions without power.

Uptime metrics are based on a comprehensive evaluation of data centre suites owned and operated by Digital Realty worldwide, using standard industry methodology. 

Total operational minutes were prorated per year for each data centre suite, beginning on the commissioning date, from the start of 2007 through 2017.
