Gartner names Veeam a leader in Magic Quadrant for Data Center Backup and Recovery Solutions

23 Oct 2019

Gartner’s 2019 Magic Quadrant for Data Center Backup and Recovery Solutions has named Veeam, Commvault, Veritas, Dell EMC and IBM as leaders in their fields.

The Magic Quadrant analyses backup and recovery vendors based on their ability to execute and completeness of vision in a number of different areas, including a company’s business models, product strategy, innovation, and market understanding.

Commenting on its position as a leader, Veeam states it is the third time Gartner has recognised the company as a category leader, validating Veeam’s investment in delivering a complete cloud data management portfolio to its customers and partners, and with robust support that ensures data protection across physical, virtual and cloud environments.

“We’re entering Veeam’s Act II as we look beyond our traditional capabilities to define the future of how enterprises will protect and manage their data across physical, virtual and multi-cloud environments,” comments Veeam cofounder and EVP of sales and marketing, Ratmir Timashev.

“This involves embracing new ways of working with our partners to bring holistic and powerful backup solutions to the market. In our view, this report is a testament to our team’s dedication to creating compelling cloud-focused solutions and providing the highest levels of customer support. I’m thrilled that we’re named a leader.”

The report notes, “Veeam’s portfolio consists of the Veeam Availability Suite, which includes Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam Agents for servers and workstations, Veeam Backup & Replication for AWS and Veeam ONE; with Veeam Backup & Replication being the core product.”

“In addition, Veeam delivers Availability Orchestrator, which is an enhanced orchestration tool for disaster recovery automation, and N2WS Backup & Recovery, a cloud-native tool for backing up Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances and cloud-native AWS applications.”

The report outlines vendors’ strengths and weaknesses based on Gartner’s analysis.

Amongst Veeam’s strengths:

  • Veeam supports customers transitioning to the cloud by offering compelling hybrid cloud backup and cloud-native backup capabilities for AWS environments.
  • Veeam has a large and reliable ecosystem of partners and system integrators that enables it to support customers in both mature and emerging markets.
  • Veeam’s customers often highlight its ease of use, simplified deployment and configuration experience.

Amongst Veeam’s cautions:

  • Delays in comprehensive support for NAS backup is forcing customers to continue using other backup vendor software alongside Veeam.
  • While Veeam’s acquisition of N2WS helps it protect AWS customer environments, integration with Microsoft Azure and GCP remains largely a work in progress.
  • Veeam lists its product suite at a significantly higher price in Asia/Pacific when compared to other regions.
